The present sketch is an attempt to present Muraviev’s perception of Crimea
from the angle of its places of memory which have also become autobiographical for the
author. In 1825 Tauride, ‘the smile of the earth, the joy of the heavens’, enchanted him with
its landscapes. But it was already then that the peninsula drew the writer’s attention fi rst of
all as being the cradle of the Ruthenian Christianity. This is why he cared for the memory,
tried to protect the ruins of Tauridian Chersonessus and sought to commemorate the work of
Vladimir the Great. He viewed the place where the Ruthenian duke was baptized in 988 as
the great treasure of Russia – the place of its enlightenment, spiritual birth, fi lled with memories
of the early history of Christianity. After the 1853–1856 war, Crimea became sacred
to Muraviev also because of the blood which had been shed by its defenders. |
