Abstract

This article presents two ribbons with gold binding recovered from graves in Gruczno. It continues the discussion on silk ribbons found in Poland and Europa. There is no doubt that these are the most luxurious items found in early medieval burials. They were imported from the Byzantine Empire. At this stage of research it remains a mystery as to how they arrived in these territories, whether via the eastern Viking route or across western Europe. The second part of the article examines the problems associated with the conservation of these artefacts. Attention is drawn to errors previously made when identifying types of binding and the types of fibre from which these ribbons were made.
