Miejsca pamięci a toruńska tożsamość zbiorowa w XIX wieku. Przypadek Kopernika

Abstract

The author explores the place of the memory of Nicolaus Copernicus and its identity-constructing potential in the space of one city, which was shared by and divided between two large language communities. Copernicus discourses in selected newspaper titles of the 19th-century Torun are analysed: the Polish “Gazeta Toruńska” and the German “Thorner Zeitung”. The author proposes a research matrix which can account for both linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The analysis draws on identity-related theories by Giesen and Bokszański.
