The Trinitarian Analogies and their Contribution to the Transmission of Terminology in Arab Christian Theology

Abstract

The importance of symbolical language consists not only in its simplicity and accessibility to the large audience of uneducated people. This paper deals with the Trinitarian analogies that were commonly used by the Arabic-speaking Christian theologians in the formative period of Christian theology in Arabic. The primary task of this research is to demonstrate the importance of symbolical language in Trinitarian theology and its theological terms, which are for the most part short metaphors that are easily learned. The terms contained in the analogies are presented in the context of the doctrinal notions to which they refer. The paper ends with ajuxtaposition of the terms found in the analogies, divided into four categories: threeness, distinction, sameness, and oneness.

Analogie trynitarne i ich wkład w rozpowszechnianie terminologii teologicznej w chrześcijańskiej teologii arabskiej. Znaczenie języka symbolicznego polega nie tylko na jego prostocie i dostępności dla szerszej publiczności niewykształconych ludzi. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy trynitarnych analogii, które były powszechnie używane przez arabskojęzycznych chrześcijańskich teologów w formacyjnym okresie teologii chrześcijańskiej w języku arabskim. Podstawowym zadaniem tych badań jest wykazanie znaczenia języka symbolicznego w teologii trynitarnej i jej teologicznych terminów, które zostały zawarte w krótkich, łatwych do zrozumienia metaforach. Terminy zawarte w analogiach są przedstawione w kontekście doktrynalnych pojęć. Artykuł kończy się zestawieniem terminów obecnych w analogiach, podzielonych na cztery kategorie: troistość, rozróżnienie, identyczność i jedność.
