Abstract

In the mixed‑member electoral system, a voter casts two votes: one for a candidate in a single‑member constituency, and one for party list proportional representation. The author discusses the reasons for adopting the mixed‑member electoral system in selected countries, political outcomes of such decisions, as well as reasons for abandoning this system. The main focus of this analysis is on the mixed‑member electoral systems adopted in Italy and Russia. Consideration of the mixed‑member electoral system is necessary particularly in Poland, as it is frequently being advocated to employ in Polish parliamentary elections.
