Hume, Personal Identity, and the Experimental Method

Abstract

Hume, tożsamość osobowa i metoda eksperymentalna Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy związku pomiędzy Hume’owską eksplikacją tożsamości osobowej a tym, czym miałoby być „rozumowanie eksperymentalne” wprowadzone do tematyki moralnej, jak głosi podtytuł „Traktatu o naturze ludzkiej”. Opierając się na analizach roli uczuć w kreacji tożsamości człowieka, staram się bronić tezy o zasadniczo spójnym charakterze tego dzieła. Zgodnie z taką interpretacją zamysł Hume’a polega na ukazaniu wieloaspektowości pojęcia ludzkiej tożsamości, w której konstrukt autobiograficznej pamięci i rozumu uzupełniony jest o poczucie tożsamości budowane na podstawie relacji z innymi, ostatecznie zaś tożsamość człowieka znajduje swe spełnienie w jego funkcjonowaniu jako podmiotu moralnego, gdzie do głosu w pełni dochodzi jej wymiar praktyczny.

The article focuses on the connection between David Hume’s explication of personal identity and what is supposed to be “experimental reasoning” introduced to moral subjects which the subtitle to the Treatise on Human Nature announces. On the basis of the results of analyses of the role of passions in creating personal identity I argue for the general coherence of Hume’s work. According to the interpretation, Hume’s intention was to present the multidimensionality of human identity in which the autobiographical construction of memory and understanding is supplemented with the identity built upon social relations. Eventually, personal identity finds its fulfilment in a person’s moral agency which reveals its practical dimension.
