Abstract
Since the 1990s, the number of awarded doctorates has been steadily increasing, along with their scientific significance—accompanied by structural transformations in doctoral education often described as a “silent revolution.” The dynamics of these processes have sparked growing scholarly interest in the issue of doctoral candidates, particularly within the sociology of higher education. The aim of this study is to (a) estimate the level of research interest in doctoral candidates; (b) identify the countries where this interest is the highest (and lowest); and most importantly, (c) determine the key research problems addressed in scholarly publications. Methodologically, the study draws on a systematic literature review of the leading international journals in the field of social research on higher education. In the conclusion, we reflect on why Polish sociology has so far devoted relatively little attention to doctoral candidates and point to potentially promising directions for future research.
Od lat 90. XX wieku systematycznie rośnie liczba doktoratów, a wraz nią ich naukowe znaczenie, któremu towarzyszą strukturalne przemiany w sposobie kształcenia, określane mianem cichej rewolucji.
