Abstract
This article is devoted to the main question, how Piave and Verdi realize the Renaissance principle of imaginatio and use some motifs and topics connected with dream and fancy, that are essential categories to the art of 16th century, and also are prevalent in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The analysis of chosen scenes allows to establish, which parts of text of drama, referring to the motifs of dream and fancy, were removed or changed, and how, in turn, this procedure influences the musical set of libretto. Finally, it allows to answer some general questions about the interpretation of Shakespeare’s drama by its Romantic readers. The particular description is applied to the following scenes: Mi si affacia un pugnal… (1. act), final of 2. act, scena delle apparizioni (3. act) and gran scena del sonnambulismo (4. act).
