„Uczyń nas otwartymi” – konteksty otwartości

Abstract

Wśród wielu wymagań współczesnej kultury żądanie otwartości należy do najważniejszych. Przyzwyczajani jesteśmy do uznawania, że jest to zaleta ludzi i pożądany stan kultur, w których relacje wykluczania zastępowane są pluralizmem i tolerancją. Rzadko dostrzega się również zagrożenia związane z bezkrytyczną otwartością, w której może ujawniać się zaburzenie tożsamości, nierespektowanie granic, aż po egoistyczną samowolę. Taka nieuporządkowana otwartość wydaje się umniejszać tendencje do trwania i utrwalania dotychczas obowiązujących wzorców życia i kultury, uwypuklając zmienność i nietrwałość wszystkiego oraz skłaniając też ku relatywizmowi i konformizmowi. Wydaje się, że dopiero wraz z otwartością możliwa się staje koegzystencja wykluczających się ludzi, poglądów, kultur.

Amongst many demands of the contemporary culture, the demand of openness is one of the most important. We are used to think that openness is a virtue of people and a desired state of culture in which relationships based on exclusion are replaced by pluralism and tolerance. However, it has seldom been noticed that there are also risks connected with the indiscriminate openness in which the distortion of identity, the lack of respect for any borders whatsoever and the egoistic arbitrariness can reveal themselves. Such unordered openness seems to diminish, on the one hand, the tendencies to continue and consolidate hitherto predominant ways of life and cultural patterns and, on the other, highlight the variability and instability of everything, prompting thereby relativistic and conformist attitudes. It seems that the coexistence of conflicting views, cultures and people only becomes possible together with openness.
