Abstract

In this paper I consider the relation of the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science to research on the subject, which is more philosophical term. Cognitive scientists speak about system, organism, and agent in dependence of discipline. The different associations about “subject” lead to conflict in interdisciplinary discussions but a compromise is possible. The trouble spots are intentionality, free will and understanding. These are typical philosophical issues ignored or explained on subpersonal level by the sciences. I argue that the rational discussion about these three questions can be scientific and philosophical alike. To prove it I consider the ways of understanding the role of a subject in intentionality, free will and understanding and try to compare the scientific and philosophical points of view.
