Abstract

Easel painting The Dawn painted by Cyprian Kamil Norwid in Paris in 1857 belongs among a scarce preserved legacy of the artist’s oil paintings, represented today by just a few works. Since 2007 it belongs to the Dukes’ Lubomirski Musemin the Ossoliński National Institute. The painting needed to be subject to necessary conservation treatment, which gave an impulse for a preceding thorough research. This comprised diverse analyses of the surface and structure of the painting with non-invasive methods (X-ray, UV- and IR- fluorescence, IRreflectography, OCT, microscopic observations). Next the analyses of collected samples were performed (XRF, VIS and UV microscopic analysis, SEM-EDS, FTIR, micro-chemical analyses etc.). The results of conducted research allowed to obtain vast amount of information on the artefact – on its complex material history and structure, comprising two author’s versions of the composition as well as on the condition of the whole structure. Basing on the collected knowledge treatment proposal was established followed by conservation and restoration of the painting, that would allow for exhibiting the painting.
