Emperor Goshirakawa was a great lover of art. His passion for native poetry and objects of virtu as well as his involvement in collecting and increasing of treasures of Japanese culture is remarkable. This paper discusses Goshirakawa's cultural and artistic activity, especially in sphere of painting. Mentions of picture scrolls from his collection appear in many sources that let us know their subject matter, circumstances of their making and transmission. Such splendid works must have aroused common admiration, also in the context of refined entertainment called eawase (painting contest), when they occasionally were shown. |
