Abstrakt:
This paper aims for answering the question whether the hand-made kozo paperand a consolidating adhesive funori can be applied as elements of facing fortransferring mural paintings. The history, technique of the making, propertiesand original use of those products are described, as well as their first applicationfor transferring mural paintings in Japan. Facing made of traditional Japanesematerials has been subject to durability tests and its biological resistance hasbeen checked. It has also been compared with facing made of machine-madekozo paper and methyl-cellulose. The source of author’s practical experiencewas transferring a fragment of mural painting in an ancient Egyptian tomb.Laboratory tests and practical conservation experience have demonstratedlimited possibilities of the use of facing made of traditional Japanese materials.
