We focus on the extent to which polycentric urban regions can substitute for the agglomeration economies provided by large cities. Building on an open‐source software tool that helps identifying polycentric developments in urban regions, we analyse the spatial structure (in terms of size, dispersion and polycentricity) of 94 regions across 34 European countries and link this to their level of total factor productivity.

The impact of cities’ transportation network connections on regional market integration: the case of China’s urban agglomerations
Liu, Xueqing; Derudder, Ben; Yu, Bo; Wu, Qun; Witlox, Frank
Despite growing scholarly attention on the role of urban networks for understanding regional dynamics, there has been limited research examining the impact of cities’ transportation network connections on regional market integration. This paper analyzes China’s four major urban agglomerations: the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and Chengdu-Chongqing. Applying a spatial Durbin model to cross-sectional datasets for 2019, we provide insight into the role of cities’ transportation network connections in promoting regional market integration, considering both the potentially heterogeneous impact of network connections and the interplay between network and agglomeration externalities. Our results indicate that: (1) cities’ transportation network connections have an inverted ‘U’-shaped effect on regional market integration; (2) transportation network connections have spatial spillover effects; (3) the positive impact of transportation network connections on regional market integration becomes more pronounced as city size decreases; and (4) there are neither complementary nor substitution effects between network and agglomeration externalities. We reflect on the broader implications of our empirical findings for regional development strategies and discuss possible avenues for further research.

Does urban polycentricity contribute to regional economic growth? Empirical evidence from a panel of Chinese urban regions
Yang, Yuting; Caset, Freke; Derudder, Ben
Research examining the economic effects of urban polycentricity remains inconclusive. We contribute to this debate by developing a longitudinal framework in which changes in polycentricity in Chinese urban regions are linked with changes in total factor productivity. While we find no evidence of urban polycentricity being conducive to economic growth, we observe that the relationship depends on population size and the interactions between cities. We also find that cities borrow size from nearby cities in large urban regions, contributing to regional economic growth. We use our findings to reflect on China's regional economic and urban development strategies.

Urban co-opetition in megaregions: measuring competition and cooperation within and beyond the Pearl River Delta
Demuynck, Wander; Zhang, Weiyang; Caset, Freke; Derudder, Ben
Megaregions are often argued to be characterized by complex dynamics of both competition and cooperation. To better understand this ‘co-opetition’, this research draws on network thinking to theoretically conceptualize, methodologically specify, and empirically assess competitive and cooperative relations between a megaregion’s constituent cities. Conceptually, we draw on insights from niche overlap theory to develop a methodology for assessing the direction and strength of cooperative and competitive intercity relations in megaregions. Empirically, the methodology is illustrated for the case of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) by drawing on human mobility big data as a proxy for flows of human capital. By comparing patterns on a regional, provincial, and national scale, insight is gained into the positions and roles of cities within the megaregion. Based on the results, we discuss the added value of this novel framework for understanding megaregional dynamics and reflect on possible avenues for further research.

Examining the evolving structures of intercity knowledge networks: The case of scientific collaboration in China
Dai, Liang; Derudder, Ben; Cao, Zhan; Ji, Yufan
Drawing on data on scientific co-publications derived from the Web
of Science for the periods 2002–2006 and 2012–2016, we construct
and analyse a key element of China’s intercity knowledge networks
(CIKNs): scientific collaboration networks. Employing networkanalytical
and exponential random graph modelling techniques,
we examine the evolving structures and driving mechanisms
underlying these CIKNs. Our results show that the density of the
CIKNs has significantly increased over time. CIKN flows are dense
in the Southeastern but sparse in the Northwestern part of China,
with the Hu Line acting as a clearly visible border. As the
dominant knowledge centre, Beijing is involved in scientific
collaboration networks throughout the country, with the
diamond-shaped structure anchored by Beijing-Shanghai-
Guangzhou-Chengdu becoming evident. We find that preferential
attachment and transitivity are significant endogenous processes
driving scientific collaboration, while a city’s administrative level
and R&D investment are the strongest exogenous factors. The
impact of GDP and geographical proximity is limited, with
institutional proximity being the most sizable of the well-known
suite of proximity effects.

Gdzie go spędza?
W celu wyjaśnienia wspomnianych relacji w pracy wykorzystano koncepcję społecznego wytwarzania przestrzeni, ramy postmodernizmu, koncepcję miejsca znaczącego i trzeciego miejsca oraz koncepcję poczucia miejsca. Stanowiły one kontekst interpretacyjny do uzyskanych wyników badań.
Generacja Z jest na tyle silnie zakorzeniona w przestrzeni wirtualnej, że niezależnie od tego w jakiej przestrzeni fizycznej przebywa, to główną formą spędzania czasu wolnego jest aktywność wirtualna.; In contemporary times, increasing significance is attributed to modern technologies in shaping leisure time activities, especially among the youth, particularly representatives of Generation Z. For this generational group, the opportunity to use a smartphone connected to the internet, browse websites, and to engage in social media sets new frameworks for leisure behaviors and patterns of space usage.
From a geographical perspective, a crucial observation is that activities undertaken in leisure time are realized in space. However, the space of cities, depending on factors such as size and organization, is highly diverse. This, in turn, impacts the possibilities of spending leisure time, especially in the context of the demanding and highly individualized expectations of Generation Z. Hence, the question arises: How does Generation Z spend its leisure time? Where does it spend it? Do the development of the internet and new technologies influence the spatial diversity of these behaviors? Therefore, the thesis aims to determine and explain through research procedures how the space of Polish cities functions as a place where Generation Z spends its leisure time.
This work seeks to answer the above questions, considering that media or scientific communications present Generation Z as a generation inseparable from smartphones and constantly present on the internet, demonstrating a certain nonspatiality. The conducted study engages with this common discourse and, in a way, verifies the simplified message by presenting leisure activities undertaken by young people, indicating meaningful spaces in leisure time activities, and highlighting the relationships between them and the factors influencing them. The doctoral thesis addresses an important and current topic – the spatial aspect of Generation Z's leisure time activities in the face of changing realities, where social and virtual space holds significant importance alongside the classic physical space. The discussed issues are grounded in social geography, considering the examination of relationships between leisure time space and the leisure activities of Generation Z.
To explain these relationships, the thesis employs the concept of the social production of space, the framework of postmodernism, the concept of meaningful and third places, and the concept of a sense of place. These served as an interpretive context for the obtained research results. In the course of a detailed analysis, it was possible to show that Generation Z prefers enclosed spaces (residential and domestic spaces) that allow complete immersion in forms of leisure time activities based on virtuality. Other spaces, especially public spaces like sports and recreational areas, lose in popularity. Furthermore, the analyses confirm the hypothesis regarding the influence of city size on the choice of a meaningful place for spending leisure time. However, there is no confirmation of the influence of socio-demographic factors on the choice of a meaningful place for leisure time activities.
In summary, the main characteristic of Generation Z is confirmed, based on a deep-rooted connection and immersion in the world of technology and the internet, mainly through smartphones. This is expressed in the presented characteristics of leisure activities and the activities themselves in a spatial context. Interestingly, leisure activities of Generation Z in virtual space dominate regardless of the physical space, which serves as a background. Generation Z is so strongly rooted in virtual space that regardless of the physical space they are in, the primary form of spending leisure time is virtual activity.

Zanieczyszczenie światłem nocnego nieba – w stronę interdyscyplinarnego poznania, monitoringu i przeciwdziałania, Redakcja naukowa / Edited by Mieczysław Kunz, Toruń 2023, 293 s.
Wieloautorskie opracowanie monograficzne pt. Zanieczyszczenie światłem nocnego nieba – w stronę interdyscyplinarnego poznania, monitoringu i przeciwdziałania przedstawia doświadczenia wybranych środowisk, instytucji, organizacji i osób aktywnie uczestniczących w badaniach zjawiska zanieczyszczenia sztucznym światłem nocnego nieba, realizowanych w różnych miejscach naszego kraju, z wykorzystaniem dostępnych metod, narzędzi i często pionierskich pomysłów. Autorów monografii naukowej połączył jeden cel – potrzeba wnikliwszego oraz pełniejszego poznania skali, zasięgu, mechanizmów, uwarunkowań i konsekwencji zjawiska zanieczyszczenia światłem, a także skutecznych sposobów jego ograniczaniu i redukcji.

Study region
The contemporary area of Poland comprises six main regions: Baltic Coast and Pomerania, Masuria-Podlasie, Greater Poland, Masovia, Silesia, Lesser Poland, and three main river basins, the Vistula, the Oder, and the Baltic Coast.
Study focus
To fill the knowledge gap for historical floods in Poland we used documentary evidence as reliable sources to assess historical floods in Poland during the 16th century.
New hydrological insights for the region
This research is one of the most novel and comprehensive studies of historical floods in Europe, spanning floods in Poland registered in the 16th century. Specifically, in addition to the list of flood occurrence records, we also provide detailed information about the historical sources used (including estimations of credibility), extracted weather notes, and indexation of flood intensity and origins. The results showed that, based on documentary evidence, 294 floods occurred in Poland in the study period. Most were recorded in the Silesia region (170 floods). The intensity of floods estimated based on the Brázdil et al. (2006b) and Barriendos and Coeur (2004) classifications indicated that most belong to “above-average or supra-regional flood” and “extraordinary” categories, respectively. Classifications of the origin of floods based on Lambor (1954) revealed that the main reason for flood occurrences in Poland during the 16th century was rain and its subtypes (torrential, frontal, and long-lasting, accounting for 53% of floods).

Documentary evidence is increasingly being recognized as a precious source for assessing flood records. We have used this type of proxy data to identify the occurrence of floods in Poland from the 11th to the 15th centuries. In addition, we estimated the intensity of each flood event using the best-known classifications for Europe (Barriendos and Coeur, 2004, Brázdil et al., 2006) and assessed their origin based on modified Lambor’s (1954) criteria. The database of floods in Poland contains 166 occurrences in the study period. Most occurred in the 15th century (61.4%). Of the studied regions, Silesia and the Baltic Coast and Pomerania regions were the two most affected by flood events, each accounting for 33–34% of instances. Based on the Brázdil et al. (2006) classification, 77 of the recorded floods are above-average or supra-regional. Also, the indexation of floods based on Barriendos and Coeur (2004) demonstrated that 99 were extraordinary flood events. Rain and its subtypes were the leading causes of floods, with 79 records (47.6%). Flood occurrence in Poland exhibited good spatial coherency with neighboring countries. The updated and most complete inventory of floods in medieval Poland that we present here with a detailed analysis of their frequency, intensity and origin, improves the existing knowledge about this phenomenon in Central Europe. The results of this study, similarly to many other previous studies, also confirm the great capacity for documentary evidence to provide valuable and reliable information about flood records for the pre-instrumental period.

Projection of climate change impacts on extreme temperature and precipitation in Central Poland
Ghazi, Babak; Przybylak, Rajmund; Pospieszyńska, Aleksandra
Climate change is exacerbating the risk of the occurrence of extreme weather. This study has projected the change in mean and extreme climate conditions in Central Poland during near-future (2026–2050), mid-term (2051–2075), and far-future (2076–2100) periods under two climate-change scenarios in six General Circulation Models (GCMs) from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The results showed that, compared to the historical reference period (1990–2014), Central Poland will experience an increase in temperature and precipitation by the end of the twenty-first century. It is expected that the mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation totals will increase by 1–4.8 °C and 2–7.5%, respectively. Furthermore, it is projected that the average number of hot, very hot days and extremely hot days (Tmax > 25 °C, > 30 °C, and > 35 °C), tropical nights (Tmin > 20 °C), and extremely high daily precipitation (> 10 mm, > 20 mm and > 30 mm) will also increase, while the average number of slight frost days (Tmin < 0 °C), and frost and severe frost days (Tmax < 0 °C, Tmax < − 10 °C) will decline on average by the end of the twenty-first century. Therefore, it is essential for policymakers to take some appropriate measurements and strategies in advance to strengthen resilience to extreme climate events.
