This paper explores a discourse relations annotation project carried out under the CLARIN-PL initiative, leveraging the ISO 24617-8 standard. The goal is to boost research interoperability and foster multilingual research. Our team of three linguist-annotators tackled the annotation of a corpus spanning several genres, including e.g., literature and press articles in the Polish language. This effort was guided by a project expert and external linguists from the CLARIN-PL language technology research infrastructure. Several significant challenges emerged during the process. Ambiguities within the ISO standard’s relation categories, poorly-defined definitions for certain relation categories, and the difficulty of identifying and annotating implicit discourse relations, which lack explicit discourse connectives or signaling devices, were among the key issues. To overcome these problems, we implemented strategies such as regular team meetings, collaborative annotation forms, and preliminary revisions to the annotation scheme. This paper presents the project, the annotation process, and offers initial annotation data on the discourse relations and connectives identified within the corpus. Looking forward, we discuss potential enhancements to the process, including additional revisions to the guidelines and conclude with an overview of the project’s contributions and a discussion of our future development plans.

Speech pauses between turns of conversations are crucial for assessing conversation partners’ cognitive states, such as their knowledge, confidence and willingness to grant requests; in general, speakers making longer pauses are regarded as less apt and willing. However, it is unclear if the interpretation of pause length is mediated by the accent of interactants, in particular native versus non-native accents. We hypothesized that native listeners are more tolerant towards long pauses made by non-native speakers than those made by native speakers. This is because, in non-native speakers, long pauses might be the result of prolonged cognitive processing when planning an answer in a non-native language rather than of a lack of knowledge, confidence or willingness. Our experiment, in which 100 native Polish-speaking raters rated native and non-native speakers of Polish on their knowledge, confidence and willingness, showed that this hypothesis was confirmed for perceived willingness only; non-native speakers were regarded as equally willing to grant requests, irrespective of their inter-turn pause durations, whereas native speakers making long pauses were regarded as less willing than those making short pauses. For knowledge and confidence, we did not find a mediating effect of accent; both native and non-native speakers were rated as less knowledgeable and confident when making long pauses. One possible reason for the difference between our findings on perceived willingness to grant requests versus perceived knowledge and confidence is that requests might be more socially engaging and more directly relevant for interpersonal cooperative interactions than knowledge that reflects on partners’ competence but not cooperativeness. Overall, our study shows that (non-)native accents can influence which cognitive states are signaled by different pause durations, which may have important implications for intercultural communication settings where topics are negotiated between native and non-native speakers.

Experimental Semiotics (ES) is the study of novel forms of communication that communicators develop in laboratory tasks whose designs prevent them from using language. Thus, ES relates to pragmatics in a “pure,” radical sense, capturing the process of creating the relation between signs and their interpreters as biological, psychological, and social agents. Since such a creation of meaning-making from scratch is of central importance to language evolution research, ES has become the most prolific experimental approach in this field of research. In our paper, we report the results of a study on the scope of recent ES and evaluate the ways in which it is relevant to the study of language origins. We coded for multiple levels across 13 dimensions related to the properties of the emergent communication systems or properties of the study designs, such as type of goal (coordination versus referential), modality of communication, absence or presence of turn-taking, or the presence of vertical vs. horizontal transmission. We discuss our findings and our classification, focusing on the advantages and limitations of those trends in ES, and in particular their ecological validity in the context of bootstrapping communication and the evolution of language.

Pantomime is a means of bodily visual communication that is based on iconic gestures that are not fully conventional. It has become a key element in many models of language evolution and a strong candidate for the original human-specific communicative system (Zlatev et al. 2020). Although pantomime affords successful communication in many contexts, it has some semiotic limitations. In this study, we looked at one of them, connected with communicating the order of events in stories. We assumed that pantomime is well-suited for communicating simple stories, where events are arranged in chronological order, and less so for communicating complex stories, where events are arranged in a non-chronological order. To test this assumption, we designed a semiotic game in which participants took turns as directors and matchers. The task of the directors was to mime a story in one of two conditions: chronological or non-chronological; the task of the matchers was to interpret what was mimed. The results showed that the chronological condition was easier for the participants. In the non-chronological condition, we observed that initially, poor communicative success improved as the participants started to use various markers of event order. The results of our study provide insight into the early stages of conventionalisation in bodily visual communication, a potential first step towards
protolanguage.

W kolejnych paragrafach zebrane są m.in. informacje o pionierskich publikacjach z lat 70. XX w., najważniejszych kierunkach badań nad STR prowadzonych przez polskich językoznawców we wskazanym okresie (1977–1997), a także o pracach zorientowanych bardziej dydaktycznie.; The article is a synthetic review of Polish linguistic literature 1977–1997 from the point of view of publications devoted to the thematic-rhematic structure of utterances. The conventional boundaries of the described period are marked by the publication dates of two important monographs (Bogusławski 1977, Wajszczuk 1997). The following paragraphs gather information about, among other things, pioneering publications from the 1970s, the most important directions of STR research carried out by Polish linguists in the period indicated (1977–1997), as well as more didactically oriented works.

the Vershinians are particularly predestined for the role of "oral history actors", being a peripheral group in many respects, as one of many ethnic groups in Russia, as a Polish community in Siberia without exile descent, and as a community whose image was shaped by the narratives and expectations of people from the outside - tourists, journalists and politicians. The statements collected in this volume will allow for the verification of common views and clarification of doubts. Historical events, descriptions of traditions and customs, as well as relations with other ethnic groups presented in the informants' narratives do not compete in our study with the results of previous scientific research, but will complement or illustrate them. The outline of the history of Vershina (Chapter II) and the description of its cultural and linguistic situation (Chapter III) are a constant point of reference for the diversity of individual stories and their common features. Narratives are conducted using language/languages. Their choice and change during speech (code-switching) reflect the complex socio-cultural situation of Vershina.

Pleyer, Michael
This paper discusses the role of interactional and cognitive mechanisms in the emergence of (proto)linguistic structures and the evolution of (proto)language(s). Both the social, interactive nature of human communication and the interactional timescale have received increasing attention in investigations of how structure emerges in language. This has also led to an increasing focus on the mechanisms involved in the dialogic co-construction of structure and meaning in interaction. These include ad hoc constructionalization, interactive alignment, conceptual pacts, reuse and modification, and local forms of entrenchment, routinisation and schematisation. Interactional and cognitive mechanisms like these do not only play a crucial role in the emergence of structure in modern languages. They can also help explain how the first (proto)constructions came into being in hominin interaction. Frequently re-occuring, temporary, local (proto)construc- tions acquired increasing degrees of entrenchment, which led to their subsequent diffusion throughout hominin communities. They were then subject to processes of conventionalisation and cumulative cultural evolution. This process is hypothesised to eventually have led to the gradual transition from protolanguage to language

In this chapter I discuss the contents and functions of contemporary jokes about IT specialists. The analysis includes accounts circulated orally, in print, and electronically. It also refers to a variety of visual and verbal-visual materials on the Internet. In the first part of the chapter I use some theories of humour (especially the theory of “moving away from the norm”) to justify the use of jokes in revealing hidden norms and cultural models. Further, I reconstruct a humorous image of the I.T. specialist, which includes the following elements: physical unattractiveness, sloppiness, a lack of resourcefulness and commonsense thinking, using professional jargon in everyday life, doubtful professional competence, poor social life, a total lack of concern for sex, or helplessness in erotic contact. In the final part of the text I analyse the functions of the collected materials and conclude that they may have three mutually completing functions, which are: 1) building the identity of a “normal” male by indicating an anti-model; 2) compensating one’s own defeats and frustration by using the mechanism of scapegoating; 3) fighting with a stronger adversary by using humour as a weapon.

At the turn of 19th century there existed in oral and popular literature a group of humorous songs on wandering beggars, who were named dziady. For a long time the performance of these songs was wrongly ascribed dziady themselves. In this chapter I aim at verifying that these and claim that these texts should be linked not to the authentic creativity of beggars but to a trend within anti-beggary satirical literature, because they reveal a definitely negative and parodical presentation of dziady as a cynical boozers and swindlers looking for easy money. In the second part of the chapter I present an analysis of literary works stylized as songs from the repertoire of wandering beggars. The analysis focuses on the most frequent lexical phrases and models of versification. I conclude that these techniques of stylization were always completed with adding in the opening part of the texts a sketch about performative situation: the initial verses revealed a beggar as a narrator, who asks the audience to listen attentively to some sensational news.
