Abstract
Among many mentions on the weather in the Annales by Jan Długosz, the notes
from the 50s and 60s of the 15th century have drawn particular attention. The
chronicler mentioned exceptionally severe winters at the turn of 1454 and 1460
and rainy summers of 1456 and 1468. A comparative study of other sources indicates
that Długosz did not note all information on the seasons of the year that
would more or less vary from the average when weather conditions are concerned.
His descriptions of winters were mainly connected with military incidents, whilst
he mentioned summers during his stays in Cracow and paying major attention
to possible harvest risks. Długosz’s notes do not bring much into the discussion
on the consequences of the particularly powerful eruption of the Kuwae volcano
upon the weather conditions on Earth, Europe including, in the 50s and 60s of the
15th century (depending on the date assumed for the said eruption).
